Spam Defense

2008-02-29 by Thomas Lotterer

Dear Friends! 2008-02-19 was a special day in the history of lotterer.net messaging. For the first time in history I decided to leverage a spam filter to defeat all the crap coming into my mailbox. I always disliked the approach of anti-spam solutions tagging messages for manual review. My approach is far more aggressive and puts the sender in charge of sending proper messages.

The flood of incoming messages to my mail exchanger frequently exceeds 2000 messages a day with peaks beyond 3000.

The spam rate is often 99%. With RBL and some simple body and content filters in place roughly 92% of messages were rejected at the SMTP level.

Thanks to OpenPKG it was easily possible to extend my inbound mail exchanger, which stays in front of my Novell GroupWise Internet Agent (GWIA). The postfix MTA passes messages to spamassassin through the milter-ma while the SMTP connection is open. In case spamassassin tags the message as spam it is rejected at the SMTP level. It never reaches my mailbox, I do not have to review it. The sender receives an SMTP error and it’s up to him to resolve the problem. Now roughly 98% of messages are rejected at the SMTP level.

Little room for improvement. But already saves me some hours a week!
